Shiv Tandav Stotram : The Story Of Ravana

The Shiv Tandav Stotram is a powerful and rhythmic hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, composed by the demon king Ravana. This stotram is a masterpiece of ancient Sanskrit literature and is renowned for its majestic description of Shiva’s cosmic dance. The story behind its creation is as fascinating as the hymn itself, showcasing the depth of devotion and the divine relationship between Ravana and Lord Shiva.

The Legend of Ravana

Dashanana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka, is often remembered as the primary antagonist in the epic Ramayana. However, his character is complex and multifaceted. Beyond his role as a villain, Ravana was a devout follower of Lord Shiva, a brilliant scholar, an exceptional musician, and a formidable warrior. His devotion to Shiva was unparalleled, and it is said that he achieved great spiritual power through his intense tapasya (penance) and devotion.

How Ravana Got His Name

Ravana was not always known by this name. He was originally named Dashanana, which means “ten-headed” in Sanskrit. The name Ravana, meaning “the one who roars” or “the one with a terrifying voice,” was given to him by Lord Shiva himself. According to legend, when Ravana attempted to lift Mount Kailash, Shiva’s abode, in his arrogance, Shiva pressed the mountain down with his toe, trapping Ravana’s hands beneath it. In excruciating pain, Ravana let out a loud roar that resonated through the heavens. Pleased by his devotion and impressed by his roar, Shiva named him Ravana.

The Birth of Shiv Tandav Stotram

The story of the Shiv Tandav Stotram starts with Ravana’s deep desire to gain Shiva’s blessings. Ravana’s devotion was so intense that he once tried to lift Mount Kailash, Shiva’s home, to carry it to Lanka. This act angered Shiva, who pressed the mountain down with his toe, trapping Ravana’s hands under it.

Realizing his mistake, Ravana decided to please Shiva with music and prayer. Despite the pain, Ravana composed and sang the Shiv Tandav Stotram, a hymn that praised Shiva’s greatness, strength, and beauty. The hymn’s rhythm and intensity reflected Shiva’s cosmic dance of destruction and creation, known as the Tandava.

Impressed by Ravana’s devotion and the beauty of his composition, Shiva forgave him and blessed him with great strength and prosperity. This story shows the power of true devotion and sincere prayer.
