Atapi And Vatapi : Digestive System Of Agastya
Hindu history is rich with intriguing tales, and one such story is that of the demon brothers, Atapi and Vatapi, and their encounter with the wise sage Agastya. This tale not only showcases the triumph of good over evil but also highlights the wisdom and spiritual power of Agastya.
The Demon Brothers Atapi and Vatapi
Atapi, also known as Ilvala, and his brother Vatapi were notorious demons. Atapi possessed the knowledge of Mrit-sanjeevani vidya, a mystical power that allowed him to bring the dead back to life. Using this knowledge, the brothers devised a gruesome scheme to kill unsuspecting travelers.
Their method was simple yet horrifying. Atapi would transform Vatapi into a goat, whose meat he would then cook and serve to their guest. Once the guest consumed the meal, Atapi would call out, “Vatapi, come out!” Vatapi would then tear through the guest’s stomach, killing them instantly. The brothers would enjoy the remains of their prey, repeating this sinister act over and over.

The Arrival of Agastya
One day, the renowned sage Agastya passed through the region where Atapi and Vatapi resided. Known for his immense wisdom and spiritual prowess, Agastya was a revered figure. The demon brothers saw him as a powerful victim and invited him to dine with them.
The Feast
Agastya, aware of their intentions, accepted the invitation. As planned, Vatapi was transformed into a goat, whose meat was cooked by Atapi and served to Agastya. After the meal, Atapi called out, “Vatapi, come here!” (वतापी अत्रगछ:) expecting his brother to burst forth and kill the sage.
However, Agastya, with his divine knowledge and insight, was prepared. Patting his stomach, he calmly said, “Vatapi Jeernobhava” (वतापी जीर्णोभवः) meaning “Vatapi, be digested.” With this, Vatapi was digested completely, thwarting their evil plan. Atapi, now powerless, was left in shock and fear.
